The study was conducted
to: (1) provide an alternative model of learning English to improve the
adaptive English competence for technical vocational school students, namely
IT-BELL and (2) to produce its contextual required instruments.
The method implemented in
this study is research and development (R & D), to pursue a particular
product and to test its effectiveness. The stages consist of four: (1)
pre-research, (2) design, (3) validation, test, revision, and (4) the final
product. The subjects were the first semester students and teachers
of class XI, from 4 technical vocational schools and one of technical industry
school in Pontianak-Indonesia.
The findings of the research-development
are. (1) The IT-BELL model is significantly contribute to the improvement of
English competency of technical vocational school students--focused on spoken
and writing skills, (2) The instruments of IT-BELL model produced for its learning
process (handbook/manual, lesson plan, materials, evaluation tools) are effectively
able to demonstrate comprehensive and optimum result, (3) The IT-BELL model
meets the valid, practical, and effective criteria, (4) The students’ and
teachers’ responses are very positive; they objectively state that IT-BELL is
effective and works well as an alternative model for developing the two skills.
Data judging the results of the learning process by quasy experiment show that
Group Model is significantly faster growing than the Conventional One. Meanwhile,
the qualitative data confirms strongly that the students using this model can
develop their own potential in all level for an integrated and comprehensive
progress. The IT-BELL provides motivational opportunities for students to
develop not only knowledge but also the soft skills and maturity to be much
more communicative and creative in the orientation of the competence of ‘acting
out’ on language in use. This meets the relevant conditions of real
world-communicativeness in a miniature world of work--going into; and thus, the
IT-BELL model is positively recommended
for other similar settings.
